John Girdwood graduated from Holt High School in 1997 and continues to support his alma mater as Executive Director of the OMIA Foundation.  He has partnered with hundreds of Holt alumni both in and out of the school district to make a positive impact in public education.  He formed the OMIA Foundation in 2007 while pursuing a masters degree in administration from Central Michigan University.  He continued to run the non-profit throughout his graduate studies at Michigan State Univeristy, receiving a PhD in Sociology in 2016.  Dr. Girdwood believes that education is one of the most important components of the human experience.

Research and Writing

Dr. Girdwood’s latest research on homelessness is titled “Redefining the Homeless Experience in Michigan.”  He collaborated with young scholars on a “Sociology Remix” compilation and published “Too Proud to Beg: Recommendations for Increasing Food Stamp Participation” in 2008.  He recently received the Smiles For Life Research Award given by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine for his work presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics annual conference.
